DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The purpose of the Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) is to provide solid waste services to the citizens of Houston through collecting, disposal and recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound and cost-effective manner. The individual that assumes this position will operate trucks within the Depository Sites transporting boxes to recycle centers and land fields. Responsible for performing pre, mid and post trips daily, maintenance related vehicle safety inspection; also any operative service duties such as (checking fluid levels, air pressure and, daily cleaning of the vehicle) at the end of shift. This position is considered an essential worker and frontline responder during disaster recovery efforts. An acceptable clear driving record is required. This position
may require mandatory overtime on scheduled workdays, weekends, holidays, and in response to disaster recovery efforts. Must be willing to perform any other duties as assigned.
MUST PROVIDE OWN SAFETY SHOES.

WORKING CONDITIONS

There are frequent exposures to extreme levels of temperature, air and noise pollution and other environmental hazards.
The position requires extensive near-continuous physical exertion such as repeated lifting of heavy objects (not to exceed 80 pounds), deep bending, climbing steps and/or assuming awkward positions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

SSEDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three months of driving experience with a Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL).

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP2-2).

PREFERENCES

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
