This position is located in the Fabrication Shops of Smithsonian Exhibits (SIE), Smithsonian Institution, in Landover, Maryland. Responsibilities The Lead Exhibits Specialist serve as a lead collection specialist coordinate and facilitate the day-to-day technical operation of the shop and monitor the shipping and receiving of materials and exhibitions. In this position you will: Establish project deadlines and schedules, coordinates all phases of the Fabrication Shop’s production work, and oversees all projects’ timely and on-budget execution. Provide instruction, transparency, and understanding of projects to staff in the fabrication shop. Serves as coach, facilitator and/or negotiator. Work closely with SIE’s Director, Deputy Director, Chief of Production, supervisors, project managers, and other SI staff in all areas of exhibition design and production, with special focus on exhibit fabrication. Interpret scopes and technical specifications for exhibit fabrication, preparing material takeoffs and managing purchasing schedules to facilitate a timely exhibit fabrication process. Qualifications Qualification requirements must be met within 30 days of the job announcement closing date. Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined serving as an exhibit specialist leading and executing complex museum exhibit projects through the pre-production, fabrication and installation phases; mentoring, overseeing, and scheduling staff; and integrating computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software and techniques into fabrication process workflow. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience.
